Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences report (for example, much of the research in this area) the results in mice. Researchers led by Javier Bravo from University College Cork, divided their subjects into two groups of rodents. One lot fed a special broth containing


Lactobacillus rhamnosus, intestines, living bacteria often found in yogurt and other dairy products. Others were fed a normal diet, not fortified with microbes. The team then exposed mice tests commonly used to measure the emotional state of rodents. Most (though not all) of these tests showed significant differences between the two groups of animals. One test showed that the labyrinths were closed and open tunnels. The researchers found that mice increased bacterial decided to open two times more frequently than in control mice, they mean that these rodents are more confident and less anxious than those not fed


Lactobacillus. In another test animals were made to swim in a container from which they could not escape. Bacteria fed mice tried to swim longer than others before they surrendered and were rescued. The most intriguing of all, when Dr. Bravo cut animals vagus nerves, which transmit signals between the intestine and brain differences between the groups disappeared. The idea that gut dwelling microbes may affect the animal mind may strike some people as strange, and of course the loose ends are not tied. For his evidence that the vagus nerve is critical for relationship, for example, Dr. Bravo and his colleagues do not know yet the exact mechanism at work. There are also obvious further question: can something like this happens in humans. Some previous studies hinted at the possibility. For example, bacterial treatment can help with mental symptoms such as irritability, bowel syndrome. All this makes people reassessment relationship with bacteria that live in them, which has long been considered mainly as a potential source of infection. In an editorial this week << Nature >> increases the likelihood that widespread prescription of antibiotics, which kill beneficial bacteria as effectively as hostile to them, may be a factor in increasing asthma, diabetes and irritable syndrome bowel. If the results of Dr. Bravo refers to people, too, the mood may eventually added to the list. .
